The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
